Psalm 3:4–8, “I cried unto the LORD with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah. I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me. I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people, that have set themselves against me round about. Arise, O LORD; save me, O my God: for thou hast smitten all mine enemies upon the cheek bone; thou hast broken the teeth of the ungodly. Salvation belongeth unto the LORD: thy blessing is upon thy people. Selah.”

When David was in trouble his first response was to cry out to the Lord and the Lord heard him. When the Lord hears, He doesn’t just acknowledge that someone has spoken, He responds to their request in the best and most effective way for the best outcome for the person who has cried out. Sometimes the Lord takes time because His timing is always perfect and it is good for people to cry out to Him anyway. The more time we spend praying to the Lord and giving Him thanks and praise for His goodness and love the more we will appreciate His peace and joy in our hearts and minds.

LORD, how are they increased that trouble me!

Psalm 3:1–3, “LORD, how are they increased that trouble me! many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, There is no help for him in God. Selah. But thou, O LORD, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head.”

At times king David had a very hard life. His father in law tried to kill him. Later his own son tried to kill him and take the kingdom away from him. He often cried out to the Lord and told the Lord that everything was getting too much for him. He believed that he had many enemies and they all wanted to destroy him, in many cases he was right in this belief. However, instead of looking around a despairing or becoming depressed, he looked up to the Lord and knew that the Lord could deliver him in the Lord’s own good time.

Be wise now therefore

Psalm 2:10–12, “Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.”

The best solution for the kings of the earth is for them to accept that God is God and knows what is best for everyone. If they understand this they will accept the authority of the Messiah with joy and the whole world will be better for this choice.

Psalm 2:7–9, “I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.”

The kings of the earth had conspired together to say that there is no God. These kings would prefer to have no God so that they can be in charge of their own kingdoms and do whatever they like. However, they will never overcome the true God of heaven and earth and will, one day, have to acknowledge that they were wrong after all. On the other hand, the Lord has chosen the Messiah to reign on the earth by His own eternal decree. The Messiah will reign as the Absolute Monarch and no one will ever depose Him. Everyone will be forced to accept His authority forever.

Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

Psalm 2:1–6, “Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying, Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.”

If people don’t believe in the true God of heaven and earth then why do they keep trying to convince other people that He doesn’t exist. Surely if you don’t believe that there is a god at all you shouldn’t even worry about other people who do. The people who don’t believe in the true God of heaven and earth get together and are determined to make sure that everyone believes the same as they do. They are determined to destroy other people who do believe. If there is no God then it is a waste of time to even think about other people who do. Surely, under those circumstances, it would be better just to leave the poor deluded God believes alone and pity them in their madness. However, there really is the true God of heaven and His enemies want to destroy the facts that have been evident since creation.

Psalm 1:4–6, “The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall perish.”

The wicked are contrasted with the righteous in this Psalm. The man who refused to accept that the Lord is God and knows everything and understands what is best for every person ends up having a barren and spiritually fruitless life. This person will never stand in the Lord’s presence with joy and gratitude but will, later, have to experience regret and sorrow as he is separated from the Lord forever.

Blessed is the man

Psalm 1:1–3, “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.”

The book of Psalms is the classic example of Hebrew poetry. This form of poetry is at least as well developed as any other form of poetry from any language today. One of the main features of this kind of poetry is called “parallelism”, that is, repetition. The book of the Psalms begins with a good example of this. The first three lines contain a theme repeated and building to a crescendo. It starts with a man walking by the wrong place, then he stops to have a look and finally he sits and joins in. This man gives counter example to the true way to follow God. If a person loves the Lord then he will follow the instructions that the Lord gave to Joshua when he first began to lead Israel. (Josh 1: 8, 9) If a person fills his mind with the Lord’s ways, as written in the book of the Law, then that person will be fruitful and spiritually successful in his life. As the Lord is the Creator then He knows what is best for us, particularly for our minds. If we fill our minds with the information that it was created to enjoy then we will reach our full potential as a person before the Lord and actively contribute to our local community.
