Psalm 26:1–5, “Judge me, O LORD; for I have walked in mine integrity: I have trusted also in the LORD; therefore I shall not slide. Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart. For thy lovingkindness is before mine eyes: and I have walked in thy truth. I have not sat with vain persons, neither will I go in with dissemblers. I have hated the congregation of evil doers; and will not sit with the wicked.”

David followed the Lord wholeheartedly throughout his life. Even when he sinned, he came straight back to the Lord and confessed his sin. He asked the Lord to judge him according to his wholehearted devotion to the Lord. Even though He believed God and was counted as righteous, David lived during the time when Israel had made a contract with the Lord. If they kept the Law then the Lord would maintain their tenure and prosperity in the Promised Land. David did all he could to avoid sinners and those who refused to obey the Lord so he asked the Lord to judge him in accordance with his contract obligations.

Psalm 25:15–22, “Mine eyes are ever toward the LORD; for he shall pluck my feet out of the net. Turn thee unto me, and have mercy upon me; for I am desolate and afflicted. The troubles of my heart are enlarged: O bring thou me out of my distresses. Look upon mine affliction and my pain; and forgive all my sins. Consider mine enemies; for they are many; and they hate me with cruel hatred. O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee. Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee. Redeem Israel, O God, out of all his troubles.”

David had many enemies before he became king of Israel and then, as king, he had many enemies who wanted to destroy both David and Israel. David knew that his first option should be to call on the Lord rather try everything else first and go to the Lord when he was desperate. David knew that the Lord would bring him from this time of difficulty and would keep him from being ashamed that he had trusted in the Lord. Not only would the Lord keep David but, because David was a man after the Lord’s own heart, He would save Israel as well.

Psalm 25:8–14, “Good and upright is the LORD: therefore will he teach sinners in the way. The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way. All the paths of the LORD are mercy and truth unto such as keep his covenant and his testimonies. For thy name’s sake, O LORD, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great. What man is he that feareth the LORD? him shall he teach in the way that he shall choose. His soul shall dwell at ease; and his seed shall inherit the earth. The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.”

The Lord only does good things and He has perfect integrity. He will never promise one thing and do another and He will never do anything that is bad for us. Although, if people choose to ignore His love, He will give them what they choose or His own integrity would be compromised. People who are meek, that is, willing to rely on the Lord’s integrity and power rather than their own strength know that the Lord will always prove to be faithful. People who believe in the Lord and trust His goodness will always be at peace with themselves and their environment even though their enemies attack them.

Psalm 25:1–7, “Unto thee, O LORD, do I lift up my soul. O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me. Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause. Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths. Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day. Remember, O LORD, thy tender mercies and thy lovingkindnesses; for they have been ever of old. Remember not the sins of my youth, nor my transgressions: according to thy mercy remember thou me for thy goodness’ sake, O LORD.”

David knew that he could always rely on the Lord. He always looked up to the Lord when he needed help and he knew that he would never be ashamed. That is, he knew that the Lord would never prove to be unfaithful or unreliable. People who trust in their own devices will be ashamed in the end because they have no eternal hope. The Lord remembers and the Lord acts with goodness and kindness to all those who trust in Him.

Psalm 24:7–10, “Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.”

There is a place, without sin, where the Lord lives in all His glory. However, the city of the Lord will rejoice at His coming. The gates will swing wide open for the Lord to enter. The Lord will triumph in the end and all those who believe in Him will rejoice at His great victory when He finally deals with sin forever and all that will be left is the Lord and His glory for all those who believe in Him to enjoy.

Psalm 24:3–6, “Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation. This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob. Selah.”

Even though the entire creation belongs to the Lord, there is a place where sinners cannot go. This place is called the “Hill of the Lord”. The only people who can stand in the Lord’s presence must satisfy certain conditions. A person who has clean hands and a pure heart. This means someone who has never done or thought anything wrong. The hardest part of this concerns the tenth commandment. A person with clean hands and a pure heart has never wanted something that he doesn’t have or has earned in his own right, even as a child. A person who has not lifted up his soul to vanity has never thought that he is better or worse than he really is. The last qualification is someone who has never told a lie. This includes telling someone else you’re well when you really aren’t in perfect health. However, people who can’t live up to these exacting standards can still be counted as righteous before the Lord if they believe Him and His word.
