Ye shall therefore keep

Leviticus 18: 1-5, “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, I am the LORD your God. After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do: and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do: neither shall ye walk in their ordinances. Ye shall do my judgments, and keep mine ordinances, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. Ye shall therefore keep my statutes, and my judgments: which if a man do, he shall live in them: I am the LORD.”
When the Lord first called Abraham, he was living in a pagan society in Haran, his father Terah had taken him from Ur right down near the mouth of the Euphrates River and brought him up to Haran near the headwaters of the River. Abraham left his idol culture behind to follow the Lord. Later the Lord took Israel down to Egypt and they lived there for many years. Now that the Lord had separated them to be His own people, He wanted them to understand that there is only One God. They were not to follow the old ways that they had left behind and they were not to follow the gods of the people already living in the Promised Land. They were to follow the Lord and obey His Law, and nothing else.
