The Sabbath

Leviticus 23: 1-3, “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, Concerning the feasts of the LORD, which ye shall proclaim to be holy convocations, even these are my feasts. Six days shall work be done: but the seventh day is the sabbath of rest, an holy convocation; ye shall do no work therein: it is the sabbath of the LORD in all your dwellings.”
There are some people who question the wisdom of having holidays but the Lord taught Israel that they needed to have holidays. The first of the holidays was the Sabbath. They were to rest one day in seven. Have you ever wondered why the week is seven days long? Why not ten or five? Well it’s because the Lord God created the heavens and the earth in six days and He rested on the seventh day. The Lord God didn’t need to take six days and He didn’t rest on the seventh day because He was tired. The Lord God was finished on the sixth day and everything was very good so He rested on the seventh day because there was nothing left to do. The Lord Jesus Christ said, “It is finished!” just before He died on the cross. He said this before He died because He couldn’t say it after He died but He knew that He was going to die (Compare John 18: 4, “Jesus therefore, knowing all things that should come upon him, went forth, and said unto them, Whom seek ye?”). The salvation that He purchased with His life is finished and perfect, there is nothing that we need to do.
