Judges 6:7–10, “And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried unto the LORD because of the Midianites, That the LORD sent a prophet unto the children of Israel, which said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, I brought you up from Egypt, and brought you forth out of the house of bondage; And I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of all that oppressed you, and drave them out from before you, and gave you their land; And I said unto you, I am the LORD your God; fear not the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but ye have not obeyed my voice.”
Israel were occupied by a foreign power and under sever oppression. They were struggling to hide enough food to keep themselves alive while the Midianites were taking everything they could take. The Lord sent a prophet to them. A prophet is just someone who brings the Lord’s message. However, the Lord’s message always concerned the contract the Lord had with Israel and the penalty clauses, therefore the message always had some consequences included. The Lord always planned that oppression would lead to repentance and that would lead to restoration so the prophet’s message always looked forward to a brighter future as well. In this case the prophet pointed back to past to establish the fact the Lord had already done many good things for Israel already. This was to remind them that He loved them and did not intend to completely reject them for all time.
