Consequences

“And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life; Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field; In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.”

I once attended an academic conference with a theological scholar and we were talking about gardening. He wondered, aloud, why there were so many weeds to deal with. When I suggested that it was a consequence of the Fall, he was utterly surprised that people still believe in the concept of original sin.

This section brings us back to the fundamental rule of creation: actions always have consequences. That is, we get what we choose. God had complete integrity and will give us what we choose. He always exercises in grace and gives us opportunities to change our choice but in the end: “He, that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.”( Prov 29: 1) We can go our own way for a long time but in the end we have to pay the price.
