Joshua 3:14–17, “And it came to pass, when the people removed from their tents, to pass over Jordan, and the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people; And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water, (for Jordan overfloweth all his banks all the time of harvest,) That the waters which came down from above stood and rose up upon an heap very far from the city Adam, that is beside Zaretan: and those that came down toward the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, failed, and were cut off: and the people passed over right against Jericho. And the priests that bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the midst of Jordan, and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan.”
There is geological evidence that the Jordan River has been blocked more than once by temporary landslides. In fact, it seems as though this may have happened at least seven times. On 11 July 1927, for example, the water stopped flowing for 11 hours due to a landslide that blocked the river and on 24 Jan 1546 the water stopped flowing for two days. This fact does not mean that the Lord didn’t miraculously stop the Jordan flowing when the priests’ feet touched the water of the flooded river on that day, as recorded in Joshua 3. The landslides occurred about 27 km upriver from Jericho. Imagine the precise timing required for the landslide to occur so that the river would stop flowing 27 km downstream at exactly the time that the priests leading Israel touched the water of the flooded river. This was a great miracle performed by the Lord that day. The river water ran away south to the Dead Sea and the Israelis walked through the riverbed on dry land. The river was not able to breach the landslide that dammed it until the entire nation had passed through the riverbed and were on dry land in the Promised Land.
