Would you like to read James McNaught’s novel Sinking Sand”? click here: Sinking Sand
(The view expressed in this blog are my own and should not be taken as inspired in any way.)
2 Kings 3:20–27, “And it came to pass in the morning, when the meat offering was offered, that, behold, there came water by the way of Edom, and the country was filled with water. And when all the Moabites heard that the kings were come up to fight against them, they gathered all that were able to put on armour, and upward, and stood in the border. And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water on the other side as red as blood: And they said, This is blood: the kings are surely slain, and they have smitten one another: now therefore, Moab, to the spoil. And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them: but they went forward smiting the Moabites, even in their country. And they beat down the cities, and on every good piece of land cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the wells of water, and felled all the good trees: only in Kirharaseth left they the stones thereof; howbeit the slingers went about it, and smote it. And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not. Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.”

The mountains in Moab are higher than the mountains in Israel and Judah and they get rain when there is no rain in Judah, as in the time of Ruth. While the armies slept there was heavy rain in the mountains of Moab and the water ran down some old watercourses. This water filled the ditches that had been dug and there was plenty of water for all the soldiers in the three armies and their beasts of burden. The king of Moab heard that he was being attacked by three armies coming up from the south and he called every man of military age from his entire kingdom. They are mustered and went down to defend their land. As they marched towards the armies in the desert they saw the water and the sun shining of the water giving a red glow. They thought that the armies had quarrelled and killed each other so they came to collect plunder. However, they arrived to find three armies fresh and ready to fight. The armies of Moab were completely destroyed and the three armies went into Moab and destroyed their cities as the Lord commanded. Meanwhile, the king of Moab took detachment of seven hundred men and tried to escape. He had returned to the city to watch the battle. When he thought all hope was lost, he offered his son as a sacrifice to his god on the walls of the city. After this the Israeli armies left in disgust.
