When the Tabernacle was first built the Levites were dedicated as servants to the Priests and the Tabernacle. They had to carry the structures from place to place and assemble and disassemble the Tabernacle. However, when the Temple was built, they were given different roles, including singing and praise. One of sins that followed from Jeroboam, the son of Nebat’s sin was that he allowed anyone to be dedicated to serve as priests in the Temple (1 Kings 12: 31) When the Temple was to be rebuilt it was very important that all the people involved in the service, from priests to Temple servants, be properly qualified according to the Lord’s regulations.
