Zion

(The views expressed in this blog are my own and should not be taken as inspired in any way.)
1 Chronicles 11:1–9, “Then all Israel gathered themselves to David unto Hebron, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh. And moreover in time past, even when Saul was king, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD thy God said unto thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be ruler over my people Israel Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel. And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem, which is Jebus; where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land. And the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, Thou shalt not come hither. Nevertheless David took the castle of Zion, which is the city of David. And David said, Whosoever smiteth the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain. So Joab the son of Zeruiah went first up, and was chief. And David dwelt in the castle; therefore they called it the city of David. And he built the city round about, even from Millo round about: and Joab repaired the rest of the city. So David waxed greater and greater: for the LORD of hosts was with him.”

After Saul was killed in battle, all Israel wanted to have another king. Saul had been the people’s choice as king but it was time to have the Lord’s choice. After some time, the people came together and asked David if he would be their king. Even while Saul was king David had led military campaigns. In fact, it was David who had come in at a critical moment and killed Goliath when everyone else was afraid. David trusted the Lord and delivered Israel by the power of the Lord’s Name. At the time that David became king, it was impossible for anyone to rule a united and continuous kingdom because some of the original Amorites controlled Jebus. This was an important city that controlled the head of a road that came up from the plains near the coast to the mountain heartland of Israel. David called his soldiers together and asked them to take this city. It was a very secure city surrounded by a strong wall but Joab was able to enter the city and lead its capture. After that Joab was appointed as the senior general in David’s army. David was able to rule Israel securely without having to worry about the Philistines coming up from the coastal plains and attacking the cities in the highlands. He called his city Zion.
