Began to build

2 Chronicles 3:1–9, “Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite. And he began to build in the second day of the second month, in the fourth year of his reign. Now these are the things wherein Solomon was instructed for the building of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure was threescore cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits. And the porch that was in the front of the house, the length of it was according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the height was an hundred and twenty: and he overlaid it within with pure gold. And the greater house he cieled with fir tree, which he overlaid with fine gold, and set thereon palm trees and chains. And he garnished the house with precious stones for beauty: and the gold was gold of Parvaim. He overlaid also the house, the beams, the posts, and the walls thereof, and the doors thereof, with gold; and graved cherubims on the walls. And he made the most holy house, the length whereof was according to the breadth of the house, twenty cubits, and the breadth thereof twenty cubits: and he overlaid it with fine gold, amounting to six hundred talents. And the weight of the nails was fifty shekels of gold. And he overlaid the upper chambers with gold.”

Abraham took his son Isaac to Mount Moriah when the Lord asked him to offer his only son on the altar. (See Gen 22: 1-14) Isaac was the only son born to Abraham’s legitimate wife Sarah. The Lord tested Abraham to see if he was willing to trust the Lord above everything else. The Lord saved the righteous line that had come from the second generation of mankind through to the nation of Israel. This was also the place where David saw the angel ready to strike Jerusalem and he asked the Lord for forgiveness. It was the place that the Lord had chosen for the Temple. This site was actually outside David’s original city but was included inside Solomon’s city when it was finished. The Temple was 60 cubits (27 m) long, 20 cubits high (9 m). This basic ratio was used to build all the great cathedrals in Europe. The Temple had wooden ceilings that were covered with gold, the doors were also covered with gold while the walls had engraved gold coverings. Even the nails for the Temple were made of gold. The Lord provided all the wealth for the Temple and it was appropriate that the most valuable materials available be used in its construction to glorify His Name.
