2 Chronicles 3:10–17, “And in the most holy house he made two cherubims of image work, and overlaid them with gold. And the wings of the cherubims were twenty cubits long: one wing of the one cherub was five cubits, reaching to the wall of the house: and the other wing was likewise five cubits, reaching to the wing of the other cherub. And one wing of the other cherub was five cubits, reaching to the wall of the house: and the other wing was five cubits also, joining to the wing of the other cherub. The wings of these cherubims spread themselves forth twenty cubits: and they stood on their feet, and their faces were inward. And he made the vail of blue, and purple, and crimson, and fine linen, and wrought cherubims thereon. Also he made before the house two pillars of thirty and five cubits high, and the chapiter that was on the top of each of them was five cubits. And he made chains, as in the oracle, and put them on the heads of the pillars; and made an hundred pomegranates, and put them on the chains. And he reared up the pillars before the temple, one on the right hand, and the other on the left; and called the name of that on the right hand Jachin, and the name of that on the left Boaz.”
Cherubim first appear in the Bible after Adam and Eve were driven out of the Garden of Eden. ( Gen 3: 24) They had sinned and the Lord, in grace, kept them away from the Tree of Life so that they wouldn’t sin forever. Imagine if you kept growing older and older and could never die. You would be trapped forever in a decayed body, full of pain, without ever being able to escape. Cherubim show us both the grace and majesty of the Lord God. Cherubim were placed in the Holy Place so that people wouldn’t come into the Lord presence. The one counter example is the High Priest, who would come into the Holy Place once a year for the Day of Atonement after sacrifices were offered for his sins. The Cherubim had large wings that went from one wall to the other wall, there were two of these majestic creatures, made of gold, facing each other. The Holy Place, as in the Tabernacle, was closed off by a magnificent veil with images of Cherubim to show that this was the Holiest Place. The door way to Temple was guarded by two enormous pillars. These showed that the Lord guarded His Temple and His people, as long as they kept their part of the contract. One pillar was called Jachin, meaning “the Lord establishes” and the other called Boaz, meaning “lively”.
