Bathsheba

Would you like to read James McNaught’s novel Sinking Sand”? click here: Sinking Sand
(The view expressed in this blog are my own and should not be taken as inspired in any way.)
2 Samuel 11:1–5, “And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the children of Ammon, and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem. And it came to pass in an eveningtide, that David arose from off his bed, and walked upon the roof of the king’s house: and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself; and the woman was very beautiful to look upon. And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? And David sent messengers, and took her; and she came in unto him, and he lay with her; for she was purified from her uncleanness: and she returned unto her house. And the woman conceived, and sent and told David, and said, I am with child.”

David had been a warrior for many years before he became king. He had lived in the field as often as he had lived in houses. Now that he was king, David chose to stay home and administer his kingdom while his general Joab took the army to ensure that his borders were peaceful. Joab went and fought against the Ammonites. Every nation was convinced of the superiority of their gods and their way of life. They all preferred to conquer other nations and use their plunder to enrich themselves. This was very much the way of international affairs in those days. David was resting one afternoon on the roof of palace where he could be cool. His neighbours wife was having a bath in her courtyard, This courtyard may have been hidden from the street but it was in plain view for the king. David saw the woman and desired her. He asked one of his men to find out who the woman was and he was told. David called Bathsheba, for that was her name, to come to his house and she came and they spent time together. Later, Bathsheba let David know that she was pregnant.
