Mephibosheth

Would you like to read James McNaught’s novel Sinking Sand”? click here: Sinking Sand
(The view expressed in this blog are my own and should not be taken as inspired in any way.)
2 Samuel 9:1–8, “And David said, Is there yet any that is left of the house of Saul, that I may shew him kindness for Jonathan’s sake? And there was of the house of Saul a servant whose name was Ziba. And when they had called him unto David, the king said unto him, Art thou Ziba? And he said, Thy servant is he. And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may shew the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet. And the king said unto him, Where is he? And Ziba said unto the king, Behold, he is in the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, in Lodebar. Then king David sent, and fetched him out of the house of Machir, the son of Ammiel, from Lodebar. Now when Mephibosheth, the son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, was come unto David, he fell on his face, and did reverence. And David said, Mephibosheth. And he answered, Behold thy servant! And David said unto him, Fear not: for I will surely shew thee kindness for Jonathan thy father’s sake, and will restore thee all the land of Saul thy father; and thou shalt eat bread at my table continually. And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?”

David remained a loyal an honourable man throughout most of his life. There were a few occasions where he acted out of character but this didn’t change that fact. David had made an solemn agreement with Jonathan, while his friend was still alive, that they would care for each other and their families as long as one or the other was alive. When they made the agreement, Jonathan was the heir to the throne and David was a man with a price on his head. However, Jonathan knew the Lord and understood that David would, one day, triumph over all his difficult circumstances. Now that David was king, he remembered that he made this agreement with Jonathan and decided that he would honour the agreement that he had made. Jonathan was dead but David wanted to know if anyone from Jonathan’s family was still alive. David summoned Ziba, one of Saul’s servants, to come to the court. David asked Ziba if any of Jonathan’s children was still alive. David found out that Jonathan had a son, called Mephibosheth, who was alive but paralysed in his legs. When Saul was defeated, many Israelis ran away from their homes so that the Philistines wouldn’t commit was crimes using them as victims. When Mephibosheth’s nanny ran away, she dropped him and he lost the use of his legs. David sent for Mephibosheth and brought him to the palace so that he could be a member of king’s household and stay with the king all the days of his life. Mephibosheth was amazed that David chose to remember him but David was just keeping the promise that he had made.
