Nehemiah 6:15–19, “So the wall was finished in the twenty and fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty and two days. And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard thereof, and all the heathen that were about us saw these things, they were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God. Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them. For there were many in Judah sworn unto him, because he was the son in law of Shechaniah the son of Arah; and his son Johanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah. Also they reported his good deeds before me, and uttered my words to him. And Tobiah sent letters to put me in fear.”
Any job, no matter how large, will be finished, eventually, if you continue to work at it day after day. Nehemiah came to Jerusalem and faced a discouraging and, seemingly, impossible task. Even though he had authority from the king, he still had to motivate the local people and overcome strong opposition. After fifty-two hard days the walls were complete and made secure. While all this was happening, there were many enemies, working as hard as they could, to prevent the city from being made secure. Even the local Jews had married the strangers living in their midst and were distracted from their pure dedication to the Lord. One of the leaders of the anti Nehemiah group was married into one of the important Jewish families and used his position to attempt to destroy the work. However, the Lord was in control of the work and even the most vicious enemies had to admit that they were unable to stop the Lord. (compare Psalm 127)
