“And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him. And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.”
As soon as the Lord gave Abraham the sign of the covenant he went straight ahead and obeyed the Lord. If we read from Gen 34: 25 we find that this was an extremely painful procedure to go through. In spite of the pain, Abraham and all the men in his household went through this rite because God had commanded it. It is not such a traumatic experience for a boy who is eight days old and that is why the Lord told them to perform the rite at that time for future generations. Abraham had believed God and followed His commands as he travelled around the region but, now, he did something to show that he was willing to follow the Lord all the way. It is important for each person to do exactly what God requires of them when He calls upon them to do it. We often want to know how we can find God’s will for my life. The best way to do this is to realise that 99% of God’s will is exactly the same for every person and the last 1% will be immediately obvious to anyone who is doing the other 99%. This 99% is based on the Lord’s words to Joshua when he took over from Moses as leader of Israel “This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.” (Josh 1: 8, 9) Get that right and everything else will fall into place at the right time.
