(The view expressed in this blog are my own and should not be taken as inspired in any way.)
“Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.”
Sarah was sitting inside the tent and heard this conversation. The Lord intended her to hear it because she was one of the participants in this miracle. However, she also knew the basic facts of life, a post menopausal women cannot have a child. We know that it is possible today with both a donor egg and donor sperm and IVF but these things had not been invented yet. She was still struggling with the problem of hope deferred. ( Prov 13: 12, “Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life.”) She was happy at the prospect but laughed because she couldn’t understand how it would happen. One of the big questions of the Bible is brought to our attention here, “Is any thing too hard for the LORD?” The biggest lie that people believe today is the fact that there are things that are too hard for the LORD. Too many people believe in small god who cannot do whatever he pleases. The truth is stated in this passage: nothing is too hard for the LORD and hence it is best to trust in Him.
