Arise, anoint him

(The view expressed in this blog are my own and should not be taken as inspired in any way.)
1 Samuel 16:6–13, “And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the LORD’S anointed is before him. But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this. Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by. And he said, Neither hath the LORD chosen this.  Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel. And Samuel said unto Jesse, The LORD hath not chosen these. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither. And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this is he. Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.”

Jesse had eight sons and two daughters (see 1 Chron 2:16–17, “Whose sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail. And the sons of Zeruiah; Abishai, and Joab, and Asahel, three. And Abigail bare Amasa: and the father of Amasa was Jether the Ishmeelite.”) Samuel told Jesse to bring all his sons out to the sacrifice. Each of the sons came to see Samuel. They were all big, powerful men who would certainly qualify as kings in the neighbouring nations, however as each of the seven sons came to Samuel the Lord told him that this man was not the chosen king. After the seven young men had gone past and the Lord still hadn’t told Samuel which son was the future king, Samuel asked Jesse if there were any other sons. Jesse said there was the youngest son who was really just a child, whose job was to shepherd the sheep out in the countryside. Samuel told Jesse to bring this son and when he came Samuel saw a young, red headed, good looking boy. The Lord told Samuel to anoint this child, David, as the king of Israel and Samuel did as the Lord commanded. The Lord’s Spirit took control of David and Samuel went to his home.
