Job 1:1–3, “There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil. And there were born unto him seven sons and three daughters. His substance also was seven thousand sheep, and three thousand camels, and five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she asses, and a very great household; so that this man was the greatest of all the men of the east.”

This historical narrative took place at a very early in recorded history. Job was a good man, who feared the Lord and lived an exemplary life. We know that it occurred quite early in time because his wealth was measured in terms of livestock rather than gold or silver. Not only was successful, he also had a good sized family of seven sons and three daughters. He was the greatest of all the men in the East. After the Flood, some of Shem’s family lived in the East. (see Gen 10: 30) They lived east of Mount Ararat, where Noah came out of the ark. This also happened after the earth was divided. (Gen 10: 25) He probably lived in, what has been called, the eastern part of the Fertile Crescent around the Tigris and Euphrates River. He was not a nomad but lived a settled existence because we learn later that his children lived in houses.
