Esther 8:15–17, “And Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, and with a great crown of gold, and with a garment of fine linen and purple: and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad. The Jews had light, and gladness, and joy, and honour. And in every province, and in every city, whithersoever the king’s commandment and his decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a good day. And many of the people of the land became Jews; for the fear of the Jews fell upon them.”
Mordecai began his journey, as recorded here, by submitting to the fact that the Lord is Sovereign in all the earth. He accepted the fact that the Lord God established governments on earth to be obeyed. He also believed that true justice comes when a person keeps the way of the Lord. (see Genesis 18:17–19, “And the LORD said, Shall I hide from Abraham that thing which I do; Seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.”) Justice will never be found by people who believe that the Lord is God if they fight against the earthly authority that the Lord has established. Mordecai proved that the Lord is Sovereign and will not allow His people to be destroyed. At the beginning of this last episode Mordecai was dressed in the king’s clothes and given another man’s honour. At the end of the episode he was dressed in his own clothes and honoured in his own right. We can compare this with Eli the priest. (see 1 Samuel 2:30, “Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.”) Mordecai honoured the Lord and the Lord gave Mordecai great honour in Persia.
