Psalm 51:14–19, “Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness. O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it: thou delightest not in burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem. Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, with burnt offering and whole burnt offering: then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.”

David was deeply grieved that he had sinned against the Lord and asked the Lord to deliver him from the guilt of his sin. By right, one of Uriah’s relatives could have killed David in revenge for Uriah’s murder but David asked the Lord to save him from this punishment. He had lost his sense of peace and joy that comes from being in a close and submitted relationship with the Lord so he asked the Lord for forgiveness so that he could regain that peace and joy. David knew that the Lord preferred people who are humble and understand the fact that all the glory and honour belong to the Lord.

Purge me with hyssop

Psalm 51:7–13, “Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.”

David asked the Lord to cleanse him from his sin. In the early days of computers, when floppy disks were used, the process of cleaning all the data from a disc was called purging. David asked the Lord to clean his record of the sin that he had committed. He confessed his sin so that it could be forgiven and no longer remain in the account of his life. When the Israelis went through the first Passover they were asked to take hyssop and dip it in blood then paint the blood around the door so that the angel of death would pass over that house. David knew of this event and longed that the angel of death, who punished sinners, would be kept from his house. David was plagued with guilt over his sin and asked the Lord to restore him to his former place in the Lord’s plans. David longed to be delivered from the suffering that was caused by his grief and guilt over his sin. He wanted to have the deep and satisfying relationship that he had with the Lord before he sinned. He knew that when he appreciated the Lord’s forgiveness he would be happy to tell everyone else about the fact that the Lord was willing and able to forgive sin.

Have mercy upon me

Psalm 51:1–6, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.”

David sinned against the Lord, he committed adultery and then asked his general to murder a man so that he could cover up the first sin. (See 2 Samuel 11) When David was confronted by his sin, he was deeply grieved in his heart and repented of this sin. He knew that the Lord was loving and merciful and he cast himself fully on the Lord, trusting both the Lord’s love and mercy. David knew that, in the last instance, he had sinned against the Lord and confessed that fact. He admitted that he was born in sin but also that he was a sinner by choice.

But unto the wicked God saith

Psalm 50:16–23, “But unto the wicked God saith, What hast thou to do to declare my statutes, or that thou shouldest take my covenant in thy mouth? Seeing thou hatest instruction, and castest my words behind thee. When thou sawest a thief, then thou consentedst with him, and hast been partaker with adulterers. Thou givest thy mouth to evil, and thy tongue frameth deceit. Thou sittest and speakest against thy brother; thou slanderest thine own mother’s son. These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. Now consider this, ye that forget God, lest I tear you in pieces, and there be none to deliver. Whoso offereth praise glorifieth me: and to him that ordereth his conversation aright will I shew the salvation of God.”

While the Lord has no argument with those who accept Him as their God, He will not deal with the wicked, those who refuse to accept His wisdom and His love. They work with others who break the Law of the Lord and conspire with those who refuse to acknowledge that the Lord is God. The Lord will always be good to those who trust Him but He will let those who refuse to accept His love the consequences that they have chosen.

Hear, O my people, and I will speak

Psalm 50:7–15, “Hear, O my people, and I will speak; O Israel, and I will testify against thee: I am God, even thy God. I will not reprove thee for thy sacrifices or thy burnt offerings, to have been continually before me. I will take no bullock out of thy house, nor he goats out of thy folds. For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell thee: for the world is mine, and the fulness thereof. Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.”

This section records the Lord’s words to Israel. The Lord is their God and they need to remember that. The Lord commanded them to offer sacrifices and He will never reprove them when they follow the ceremonies that He has given them. He does’t need to take anything from them because He created and owns all the beasts in the field. The Lord doesn’t need to rely on His people to feed Him for He feeds them instead. He just calls on them to thank Him and keep the contract that they made with Him when the entered the Promised Land. If they are in trouble, Israel can call on the Lord but the Lord will never have to ask them for help.

The mighty God, even the LORD

Psalm 50:1–6, “The mighty God, even the LORD, hath spoken, and called the earth from the rising of the sun unto the going down thereof. Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God hath shined. Our God shall come, and shall not keep silence: a fire shall devour before him, and it shall be very tempestuous round about him. He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, that he may judge his people. Gather my saints together unto me; those that have made a covenant with me by sacrifice. And the heavens shall declare his righteousness: for God is judge himself. Selah.”

When the Lord speaks, things happen. When He spoke in the past, the earth came into existence and the sun began to shine. (There are many people who say that is wrong but everyone chooses what they believe in and, even the great modern scientists have great faith because they manage to find certainty from a zone of uncertainty. This takes great faith indeed! Refer to http://youtu.be/NK8VWcw8BOM to find out what this means.) The Lord has chosen Zion to be His City. Even the heavens declare that the Lord God is great and there is sufficient evidence for any to see the truth of His majesty.

But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave

Psalm 49:15–20, “But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave: for he shall receive me. Selah. Be not thou afraid when one is made rich, when the glory of his house is increased; For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him. Though while he lived he blessed his soul: and men will praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself. He shall go to the generation of his fathers; they shall never see light. Man that is in honour, and understandeth not, is like the beasts that perish.”

Even though the rich and famous can’t do anything to help themselves, people who trust in the Lord know that He can keep them from the power of the grave. Anyone who trusts in themselves can’t take anything with them when they die. On the other hand, the Lord takes those who trust in Him to be with Him forever in Paradise.
