Psalm 51:1–6, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.”

David sinned against the Lord, he committed adultery and then asked his general to murder a man so that he could cover up the first sin. (See 2 Samuel 11) When David was confronted by his sin, he was deeply grieved in his heart and repented of this sin. He knew that the Lord was loving and merciful and he cast himself fully on the Lord, trusting both the Lord’s love and mercy. David knew that, in the last instance, he had sinned against the Lord and confessed that fact. He admitted that he was born in sin but also that he was a sinner by choice.
