Let them have dominion

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

After God had created everything else He finally made man in His own image. What does it mean to be made in God’s own image? God is Spirit and we are flesh and blood so we are not made in God’s own image in that way. God is eternal and infinite but we are restricted in time and space so we are not made in God’s own image in that way. However we have the capacity to form relationships, specifically with God, so we are made in His image in that way. We are all body, soul and spirit. In the first instance, God made man to act as His agent on the earth and to have dominion over all the things that God had made. However, it is impossible for us to act as God’s agent unless we can communicate with God. The other important issue is that we must do what God wants otherwise we are not acting as His agent but as usurpers. This is a good time to consider Isaiah 1: 3 and ask ourselves are we more intelligent than the ox or the ass?
