Psalm 20:6–9, “Now know I that the LORD saveth his anointed; he will hear him from his holy heaven with the saving strength of his right hand. Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God. They are brought down and fallen: but we are risen, and stand upright. Save, LORD: let the king hear us when we call.”

David was the Lord’s anointed king but many people were trying to kill him. It was very easy for him to be discouraged and even become depressed. He had to focus on the truth rather than his feelings. He was the Lord’s anointed and he knew that the Lord hadn’t just anointed him for some kind of sick joke. The Lord acts with purpose and always for a good outcome in the long term. If the Lord sent Samuel to anoint David as Israel’s king then the Lord would make sure that David actually sat on the throne before he died. The Lord is in heaven and in control of everything that happens. Many people trust in the size of their army or the power of their weapons. Other people depend on money or having the right political connections but all these things will fail, eventually. No army, political connections or power will ever stop a person from dying. People who trust in the Lord know that they will go to be with Him forever when their time on earth is over. He will never fail them but they can’t take anything that comes from the earth with them when they die. In the past people have put their riches into their tombs with them but other people have found those tombs and taken that wealth away. The Lord hears those who believe in Him and He will keep them secure forever.
